Reimagining history
Plymouth’s engineering story is centuries old—but it had never been told like this. Wind & Foster led the production of Engineering Plymouth, a landmark documentary narrated by Dawn French. From securing funding to working with museums, we brought together history, technology, and storytelling to show how civil engineering shaped the city.
Bringing the past to life
500 years of history can’t be captured with static images alone. We animated engravings and archive photography, transforming them into cinematic sequences that revealed Plymouth’s evolution—from a medieval port to a global naval powerhouse.
A city shaped by engineering
While Engineering Plymouth celebrates the city’s rich civil engineering heritage, it also shines a light on the challenges of our time: rising sea levels, adaptation and sustainable growth. The film encourages viewers to see civil engineering not just as legacy, but as a key force in addressing climate change.
A collaborative vision
By documenting Plymouth’s transformation over centuries, the project naturally aligns with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. It invites audiences, especially young people, to imagine engineering as a form of storytelling that builds long-term social impact.
Engineering the future
Plymouth’s engineers have shaped its past—and now they are designing a future that responds to the climate crisis. Engineering Plymouth isn’t just a celebration of history; it’s a call to the next generation of engineers to lead transformative change.
The final film
More than a documentary, Engineering Plymouth is an educational tool, a cultural artefact, and a celebration of engineering’s role in shaping the city. Used in museums, universities, and industry outreach, it continues to inspire and inform, proving that history and innovation go hand in hand.
Turning research into storytelling
A project of this scale demands more than just production—it requires deep historical research, meticulous scripting, and a clear creative vision. We worked closely with historians, civil engineers, and museum archives to transform complex facts into a compelling narrative.
Shaping the world around us
The Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) has been at the forefront of engineering excellence for over 200 years. From bridges to water systems, its members design the infrastructure that keeps society moving. Wind & Foster works closely with ICE to tell these stories, capturing their impact on everyday life.
